GUNNING Konongwootong, Victoria | 1922
By Kelly Aitken In Awardees On April 24, 2026
After returning from the Great War, Alexander Gunning who had prior experience working on the land, became aware that he was eligible for land under a government program to settle returned servicemen. Through this program he was able in 1922 to obtain 330 acres of promising land at the cost of £355.05.06d near Konongwootong, Southern Grampians Region, Victoria. Alexander was legally bound to immediately commence building a homestead and fencing his land. With much toil he was able to establish a prosperous mixed farm and later a Crown Grant issued to Mary Kier Gunning was added to the holding. His descendants remain on the property today, and the family has had a long history of service to their community.
